We developed an orbit-based approach to dynamical friction in galaxies and cold dark matter halos. For the first time we provide a physical understanding of dynamical buoyancy and core-stalling, phenomena which arrest the dynamical friction driven in-fall of massive perturbers like black holes and globular clusters in cored galaxies.
